The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture

Spring 2007

Math 583 at University of Washington

Instructor: William Stein

This course is scheduled to meet in Padelford C401 MWF 1:30-2:20.

GOAL: I want very much that it be possible to compute, with proof, every arithmetic invariant of elliptic curves (and modular abelian varieties). It is very unlikely that I can do it myself. So I need your help. Our best hope to is to prove the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture, since it has very strong implications about computability. The goal of this course is to get you up to speed so you can contribute. In some sense people are stuck---a new idea is needed.
